Ceramic Braces

Most likely, no one has ever wanted to wear metal braces, but in past decades there was no other choice if your teeth were misaligned or crowded. Now there are many orthodontic choices, and you can read about two of them on our Invisalign and Lingual Brackets pages.

Braces consist of brackets which are attached to the teeth, an arch wire which applies gentle tension, and ligatures or wires which connect the arch wire to the brackets.

Ceramic braces have tooth-colored brackets, unlike the old metal brackets which gave the teeth that dark unsightly look that no-one ever wanted. These tooth-colored brackets make a very big different in how your smile and whole face look when you are wearing braces. They blend in nicely with your natural teeth.

Also, you can have white ligatures which also blend in smoothly and retain your natural look. Some staining can happen on the ligatures, if your diet includes a lot of black coffee or black tea, or curried dishes, or if you’re a smoker.

Each month when you have your braces adjusted, the ligatures are changed. So if they have become stained, they’ll be replaced and the staining is gone. The brackets themselves do not stain. Some braces are self-ligating, meaning that no ligatures are needed. The brackets have their own clasp which locks onto the tooth.

Ceramic braces are made of composite materials and are very strong. They will not fracture. They have become popular in recent years because they look discreet and feel more comfortable than the old metal braces.
