What is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint and is used to refer to a serious of problems arising from problems with this joint, commonly referred to as Temporomandibular Syndrome. Temporomandibular Disorder is also a general term for problems affecting the jaw and bite functions. TMJ/TMD is characterized by soreness in the jaw, grinding, and teeth clenching.
What are the symptoms of TMJ/TMD?
Many TMJ/TMD sufferers experience headaches and jaw soreness. Tension headaches and neck pains can be a sign of a TMJ problem. TMD can also cause physical damage to teeth as a result of an uneven bite. Popping or clicking noises in the jaw may also signal something is wrong. Change in bite, depression, ringing in the ears, tooth sensitivity, ear pain and light sensitivity are also symptoms of TMD.
How can you treat my TMJ/TMD problem?
Neuromuscular dentists spend years studying how the jaw functions for a perfect bite. The ultimate goal of neuromuscular treatment is to restore muscles to their full range of motion and to ensure that the position of your bite is perfected. Treatments may vary from reducing stress to mouth guards, orthodontic treatment, tooth reconstruction, exercises, chiropractic treatment and physical therapy.
