Snoring and Sleep Dentistry
When there is an obstruction in the airway during sleep, snoring is often the result. This can be disruptive not only to the snorer and their own sleep pattern, but to anyone sharing the bed. Snoring may be the precursor to obstructive sleep apnea which has been linked to several serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke.
There are many ways to counter obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP and surgery are two of these, but oral appliance therapy is used if these other methods are not options. Oral appliance therapy uses different types of mouth appliances to help the patient sleep more soundly. These FDA approved devices are custom made to fit your particular mouth like an orthodontic appliance or mouth guard while you sleep to keep the soft tissue from collapsing and interrupting the air flow. The purpose of the oral appliance may be used to reposition the hyoid bone, lower jaw, soft palate, and tongue. This positioning stabilizes the jaw and tongue, or reinforces the area to prevent airway collapse.
After Houston Dentist, Dr. Nab has diagnosed you and recommended oral appliance therapy as a solution to the problem, there will be many types to choose from. These may be used in conjunction with other sleep apnea treatments. A mold will be taken of your mouth to get the fitting correct so that you may wear the appliance in comfort. There may be a short adjustment period as you get used to wearing the appliance, but follow-up consultations will help to ensure that everything is acting as it should.
If you think you may have sleep apnea or your snoring has become a problem for you and your family, or you would like to learn more about the different types of oral appliances available, please contact Dentist, Dr. Nab at Midtown Dental. We serve the Houston, Sugar Land, Humble, and Katy, Texas area.
