#1- Fillings: dental fillings can last up to 15 years depending on their composition and how you care for them. Most of them tend to break down between eight to ten years. When fillings deteriorate, stray food particles and oral bacteria can gather underneath them and promote decay. Your daily brushing and flossing habits will help protect your fillings, as will receiving regular dental care from your dentist who can detect problems with your fillings early on.
#2- Gums: gum disease is a serious health concern, as this infection can damage gum tissue irreversibly as well as destroy jawbone. You can prevent gum disease from taking over your smile by brushing and flossing daily. This will keep away bacterial plaque which collects on the teeth and gumline. Unless it is removed daily, plaque will harden into tartar and cause damage to the jawbone which leads to tooth loss. Be sure to clean your pearly whites and gumline every single day, and see your dentist bi-annually to remove tartar buildup.
#3- Cancer: cancer of the mouth increases with age, particularly for men who are over 40. Using tobacco and alcohol regularly increase the risk of cancers of the mouth, tongue, and throat. Because dentists look for oral cancer during routine checkups, they are the ones who most often detect and diagnose oral cancer.
