Five Things to Know About Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are layers of porcelain material that are custom-made in a laboratory and fixed to the visible surface of teeth to restore and improve the natural look of teeth. It is helpful to have a full understanding of what dental veneers are when deciding if they are the right form of restoration for your specific dental needs.

Dental veneers: five important things to know

Important things to know about dental veneers are that they are not removable, can be used to address a range of cosmetic and oral health concerns, are vulnerable to damage without proper care, and are more stain-resistant than alternative solutions. They can also last for as many as twenty years or more with proper care.

Dental veneers are not removable

The veneers cannot be removed, which many patients see as a benefit to treatment as there is little to no risk of them coming loose during daily life. Dental veneers are also considered a permanent treatment solution. This is because the process typically involves removing a small amount of enamel to allow for the ideal fit and comfort of the veneer(s). However, veneers can last for well beyond a decade, and they can easily be replaced when necessary to do so.

Dental veneers can address a lot of concerns

Dental veneers are a versatile treatment solution and can address a variety of concerns. Notably, veneers are used for the following reasons:

  • Treat severe stains
  • Correct mild misalignments
  • Repair damaged teeth
  • Create an even smile

Each dental veneer is customized to achieve the ideal purpose and help the patient meet their goals for treatment.

They are vulnerable to damage and must be cared for properly

The veneer material is strong and durable. However, veneers are not as strong as a metal alloy dental crown, for instance. Subsequently, they are primarily utilized on more visible teeth that are not subject to as much daily pressure, rather than for molars that are used more for chewing.

Dental veneers are more stain-resistant

When compared with natural teeth enamel and alternative treatment solutions such as dental bonding, dental veneers are more stain-resistant. Of course, caring for teeth properly is still important and stains can still occur, but in general, it is easier to care for veneers than with alternative restorations.

Dental veneers can last for more than 15 years

The lifespan of dental veneers depends on how well the patient cares for them. On average, dental veneers last about 15 years (and more than twenty in some cases). Regular check-up visits allow the dentist to check on the condition of the veneers and make minor repairs when necessary.
